Thread on privilege and veganism.  →
robot-heart-politics: Interesting read. I think the thing that bothers me the most is the assumption that a straight vegan diet is the easiest, cheapest, most accessible thing in the world. For many, right here in America, getting fresh produce on a daily basis is a near impossibility. Growing your own produce is not NEAR impossible, it IS impossible.  The availability and expense of fruits and...

Most ridiculous DADT argument ever.
DW: Don't ask don't tell policy repealed. I have mixed feelings. Hopefully our military doesn't turn into a raunchy club scene. Id be done at that point.
DW: Must keep things professional. I have friends that don't have a problem with that but I also have friends that can be total queens...but its cool. As long as they will shoot the enemy without hesitation its cool.
CB: I think it's a disaster. Some dude is gonna get his head kicked in for being gay in the barracks somewhere. I think these senators need to spend a weekend with the E-1 to E-4 crowd for a couple of weekends.
DW: I agree with you CB..like I said I have mixed feelings. I honestly think it was fine the way we had it. Think of all people the military can lose if they do not agree....some people feel strongly about this type of deal especially churchfolks.
DW: But if some bitch comes up to me like the marine butch in okinawa and lick my face I will punch a ho! Oh that was terrible. Crystal was right next to me just laughin her ass off.
EO: I think its a good thing. Centuries ago people had similar concerns about women or blacks in the military. They continue to serve their countries with honor and distinction. Gays will have to suffer hazing and persecution at first. I'd imagine in the next 50 years or so we will get over it.
CC: I feel ya, EO. I see no reason why a gay person can't serve openly. You still have to be professional at all times regardless, and I think raucous straight dudes acting a fool when out at a club or on TDY is just as tacky as a total queen. Everyone needs to keep it clean when on duty.
As for someone getting their head kicked in, that's on the person doing the attacking. We can't discriminate under the guise of protecting those we are oppressing. Besides, the majority of gay men I know seem like they can handle a fight better than most straight guys I've seen.
LP: As long as they don't "switch teams" during battle, its all good! We are lucky they are even serving! some straight ppl won't even serve.
JB: Its Absolutely not the same as blacks and women!
JB: This is going to come down to "rights" they have a "right" to be gay now. Here is the thing... they had a right before they just couldn't talk about it or act like it but neither should or do I about the fact that I am not gay. What place does it have period. It was fine before. NOW we are going to ha e problems. I don't care if you are gay but I hate oportunists and there are gonna be a few that are gonna throw how gay they are in the face of the wrong person because they think they have the "right" to now. It should never come up!
BP: Ditto, that's why it was "Don't ask, don't tell" and not "no gays in the military". I mean it was basically turning a blind eye. Your sexual preference shouldn't have anything to do with your ability to do your job and follow orders. Like JB said, we're going to have a problem now. This just gives them the mindset that they have the right to be flamboyant about their sexual preference. The problem that caused all this is that gays feel they are not allowed in the military by current policy... not the case. It's don't ask, don't tell. So if you are... no one gives a shit, shut up and do your job. But, that's not enough. There has to be a small group or a damn coming out party when it shouldn't even be an issue.
JB: CC I agree with some of your points but what kind of a blanket statement is it to say "can handle a fight better than..." is that like all straight men run faster? This is the kind of goofy crap that will cause a problem. I personally don't care if most gay guys fight better its just a dumb statement to make and some guys (like the tough special forces guys) wont agree with that and since being tough is a big part of their job they may decide to defend who they are by proving what a ridiculous statement that was. Again this is the problem, why do we have to separate special groups to then say they are the same. "Don't ask don't tell worked cause it DOESN'T MATTER! Until it does... when some goon says what u said at a military bar... it will matter.
JB: Exactly BP! Cause once its "out" they have to be separated. I am not one of those guys that think all gay guys want to touch my privates but that doesn't mean I want to shower with them. How is basic training going to work? Having a gay guy in the guys barracks is gonna be like me being in the womens barracks. So what do we do? I guess they get their own room and bathroom cause the women wont want a guy in their shower "gay" or not. SEE THE PROBLEM PEOPLE, SEE HOW ITS NOT LIKE COLOR?! And this is just the beginning
CR: But you know what, there are much bigger issues (non-political) happening now, so I kinda don't care...much bigger issues that effect every person right now.
JB: Yes CR there are but this post was about this
DW: Yeah CR! Stick with the subject...what do you think? lol
Like I said, shit was fine the way it was. I'm not against gays in the military, I'm just not wanting to deal with the bullshit that's going to come with it....I see it coming..."Sgt so and so is picking on me because I'm gay and he doesn't like me.." blah blah blah....
DS: My 2 cents is this, in the past 20 years I can on hand recall a time I even remotely considered if someone I worked with was gay or not and that was only after someone else brought it up. Bottom line is this, gays have been serving for centuries now, it is those who don't believe this is true that are going to have the issues. If I were to go to work today and start rambling on about my sex life with my wife, then I would/should be punished under conduct unbecoming. Why will it be any different with homosexuals? The standards are the standards and that is fact. The only problem I will see is if at some point the powers that be try to force me to attend a course on what being gay is all about. I don't condone it, according to my beliefs it is wrong, but I don't get paid to force others to believe what I do and it doesn't prevent me from being a fair and equitable leader. If people cannot accept that people are different then they have no place in the military. For those concerned about sleeping or shower issues, get over it, you probably have already been around a gay person in these situations if you have deployed more than once or twice.
DW: more and more i feel like the end is near...lol
DS: Meant to say on 1 hand...but you get the point.
JB: DS THEY NOW HAVE THE RIGHT (valid cause to act it out) and yes I probably have been in the showers with them BUT DIDNT KNOW AND THEY WERENT ALLOWED TO THROW IT IN MY FACE! If a gay person is attracted to the same sex then how can they shower and sleep together?! If what you are saying is true then we should just mix the barracks all together. women, men, straight, gay. Why not right?
DS: Let me put it this way. What if the country you loved told you that if you want to join the military you can do so, but you cannot kiss your wife in public? You have the right to go home and do it, but you cannot be seen on base or acknowledge that you do it. You have to look at it from perspectives other than your own. If you don't then I'm sure there are other things out there you would like to see banned as well. Again I say, if someone starts to "throw it in your face" that they are gay, then just like us heterosexuals there are punishments for such actions. Will there be some turmoil and disputes, yes...but have you ever been stationed at a place that didn't have a victim's advocate? They are there currently because of the numerous drunken attacks by men on women or vice versa.
DW: Now that's what I call a party....next thing you know orgies are going to be allowed in the military....wait a minute...which brings me to my next thought...still missionary only? lol
DW: Like I said mixed feelings...I don't mind so much the gay part...it's the other shit that's going to come up with it....I was suitemates with my lesbian friend at school no big deal...she's a smart very educated professional. I'd fight next to her any day.
JB: It is naïve and irresponsible to think this is no big deal and will take care of itself. AGAIN, Gays could be in before. All this is doing is creating a problem. It makes as much sense as passing a law that allows adultery. That is against the Military Code right? Well I think it’s my right to have multiple affairs. You would say ok knock yourself out, just don’t talk about it. But then I say No I want to have the RIGHT to have affairs! This whole thing is so stupid and it’s is the begging of the end. We are allowing the principals that our country and military were founded on erode out from under us all in the name of giving rights! Being gay has NOTHING to do with serving your country neither does having affairs or being straight so why are we talking about it!? Before, we were just soldiers not straight soldiers or gay or adulteress just soldiers.
DW: This has become a very interesting post. lol....
I'm glad that all of you (my friends) have been mature about your postings. I think I may have written the most goofy stuff lol
DS: Nah...we are all just closet freaks (poor choice of words given the subject matter)...you on the other hand are not so..JK!
DW: HA! I knew it! I couldn't say much as the little airman in Charleston but I knew it you were a freak Sgt Small! lol
DS: Well, they do call me Biggy (Ricky Harris tagged me that after Biggy Smalls died)...there's a name from the past huh?
JB: We are called to live by a higher standard. I am not having an affair nor am I married to multiple women but I want the right to be able to should I choose. So I want congress to get on that NOW! As for the things I must accept before I join, well I can’t go to strip clubs and I can’t go out and act like a drunken fool either. (I don’t want to but those are “rights” in the civi world) I knew those things before I joined and had to make a choice about what is more important to me… I made my choice! WE CANNOT MIX THESE WORLDS! THEY ARE NOT AND SHOULD NOT BE THE SAME!!!
EO: ‎@JB, how is it not like women or blacks? In my eyes they are the same thing. The only advantage for gays is that you cannot tell a straight person over a gay one just by looking at him/her. Yet however you slice it up, it's about the rights of serving your country openly no matter what race, creed, color, gender, or sexual orientation you are. This isn't about opportunists trying to shake the boat, it's about denying any group of people the rights and freedoms to serve their country because they can't openly serve as they naturally are.
You say everything was fine the way it was. Imagine if they didn't allow jews to serve. You can't tell a jewish person from a non-jewish white american unless they told you. Current policy would be they can serve as long as they don't admit to being jewish. Yet they can shoot and kill the enemy just as well as anyone else.
JB: I LOVE EVERYONE THAT WILL SERVE! I LOVE MY COUNTRY! I have been sworn to protect it and I think this is going to cause more harm than we know. Because for those who really want to serve in our military that also want to go to strip clubs and be gay and have sex in other positions than missionary... they will keep it to themselves. I respect everyone’s point on here, and at no time has it been my desire to be rude or ugly. (well maybe a little bit about the gays fight better than straights) otherwise this has been great conversation!
JB: EO, being in the military there is a lot of "bullshit" to deal with as it is. I love being in the military but I don't care for the fact that the headline on the new york times is all about repeal of don't ask don't tell. Like CR did say...we have more important issues to be worried about...so why is this such a big deal in today's society. Everyone fight's for rights every day....women, minorities, and so on.
No one denied a gay man or woman the right to serve in the military. I believe that the don't ask don't tell policy kept things a lot more peaceful than it's going to be now. I've seen two separate occasions where someone claimed mistreatment because of their race...and in both occasions the person that called it was completely wrong and just looking for an excuse and a fight.
Again NO ONE DENIED A GAY PERSON THE RIGHT TO FIGHT FOR THEIR COUNTRY. The only way you were denied is if you TOLD.
DW: I LOVE YOU ALL~!
JB: Because as a white man serving with or showering with another race has no effect on me. I love all races. I also LOVE women but I shouldn’t sleep with them and shower with them. You know why the men’s and women’s bathrooms and dorms and ect is segregated? SEX! Cause it puts sexual creatures that are attracted to one another together at time when they have little or nothing on! IT’S ABOUT SEX, IT’S ABOUT MY RIGHTS BEING VIOLATED TO ALLOW ANOTHER PERSONS RIGHT BE MADE POSSIBLE. Now I will have to shower with a vocal gay man and I have to suck it up. It’s not "cool" to be tolerant. I don’t want my wife showering with men straight or gay. Can I shower with your wives if I promise not to act on it?
BP: ‎@EO that is a bit ridiculous and altogether an idiotic analogy... in my opinion. The issue is not race or religion nor even sex... it's sexual preference.
It is not like sex because how did we handle women joining forces?? By keeping them separate.. separate barracks. Sex is a distraction... rape is a problem. You can't separate a straight man/woman and a gay man/woman and call it good... what would you have to do... put 1 gay woman with all straight women? or the same for men? Sure do I feel that there are gay people that are capable of making it through boot camp without having sex... sure but it wasn't a chance we were willing to take with men and women so why are we willing to take that chance now with men and/or women?
EO: Btw, I also respect everyone's point here and forever in debit to all that serve our country! You guys rock!
JB: BP our post is very similar. Its common sense to me.
BP: yea i didn't see yours before I responded. Gays aren't the problem it's the exploitation of being gay that is going to be the problem. I think it's an unnecessary controversy... what about fraternization? Let's make a controversy about that! Why can't an E and an O be open about their relations??? I mean really if it ain't broke.. don't fix it. Swallow your pride.. swallow your gay pride... shut up and do your job.
JB: Love it!
CC: Yeah, gays could serve before, just as long as they didn't openly date anyone of the same sex. That is ridiculous. I know of at least one gay person who has been serving for the past couple of years, so gays have been in the military.
Ending DADT doesn't give gay men the right to touch your penis in the shower or force you to cuddle them in bed. This just allows them to honorably serve their country and feel free to live their off duty lives how they see fit.
Oh, and @JB - I wasn't trying to make a blanket statement. I just feel that a lot of people think gay men fit the stereotypical sissy boy cross dressing queen image. There are plenty of tough guys out there who are attracted to men, so we don't need to pretend that we are protecting helpless little girlie men from getting beat up by telling them to remain in the closet until they finish their term in the armed forces.
DW: CC you crack me up. I have seen some buff ass hot gay men lol...on porn! HA! I'm just kidding...okay well my friend S****a once showed me some shit I will never forget....oh Charleston was fun LOL
DW: I guess I wasn't kidding.
JB: CC do you have a girlfriend I could take a shower with as long as I don't touch her?
JB: And you did make a blanket statement and you did it without anyone saying someone needed to protect gay guys. It was ignorant and its the exact reason this was a bad idea.
JB: When you join the military you give up a lot of rights! Its a choice. Why can we change some and not all and who decides?
DW: JB be nice! lol....CC do you have a gf I can shower with as long as I don't touch her? Bwahahahahaha...
CC: Yeah, but you didn't give up the right to be able to have a sexual relationship with a consenting woman.
And I believe I prefaced my statement with the phrase "as for someone getting their head kicked in," as a direct response to CB's post. If this issue all boils down to guys willing to beat the shit out of each other because their masculinity is threatened, then some people need to grow the fuck up and thicken their skin a bit.
Also: I do have a girlfriend and no you can't shower with her. If you're worried about someone getting all hot and bothered at the sight of your naughty bits in the shower, you might need to grow up as well. As DS put it, you've probably showered with a couple of gay guys already without knowing it.
JB: I don't really want to im just saying that if a guy is attracted to a guy then they shouldn't shower cause it creates problems and like I said earlier I don't thing all gay guys are sex crazed nymphs that want me. That's not the point. The point is men and women that are attracted to each other are seperated. That's for good reason. Would it be stupid for women to not want me to be in their barracks showering with them? No! They deserve privacy from anyone that MIGHT want to see them naked
JB: They should be allowed to get dressed and ready without the opposite sex in there.
JB: Why can't I shower with her. Do u think she is so great looking that I couldn't control myself? Would I have to "touch her naughty bits?" None of that matters. She should be able to shower with out wondering if I am or am not checking her out. THAT IS HER RIGHT!
JB: As for the consenting sex... I can't have open affairs, that's the same thing.
JB: ‎"the majority of gay men I know seem like they can handle a fight better than most straight guys" that’s the definition of a blanket statement. Just like if I said the majority of straight guys run faster than gay guys" What does being gay have to do with being able to fight or run?
JB: I am not saying they cant shoot or fight. I am not saying they want me. I am not saying they are less of a person than me. I AM SAYING THAT THIS IS A BIG DEAL AND IS GONNA CAUSE MAJOR PROBLEMS.
DW: OKAY BOYS I THINK WE HAVE ALL SAID OUR VIEWS. LET'S SEE HOW THIS GOES!
JB: ok I will stop but I really would love it if you would allow my friend CC to respond one more time....
DS: Like someone said hours ago...there are much more important things in this world to be worried about. DADT was the laughing stock of the military for the past 15+ yrs or so and we used the phrase all the time as a punchline to a joke. If anyone is worried about the sex or shower issues then at least now you know that you likely will be around a gay person at some point so maybe this will be even more incentive to get in shape so you don't get manhandled (totally a joke y'all). I mean if you have ever been to the swimming pool at Al Udeid in the summer time, there was a lot of female skin showing and I managed to restrain my powerful urges to attack a female...oh yeah because I am married already!! As I have said several times before, you already have and it didn't bother you so what is the flippin problem? Wait...maybe we should start separating teenagers in gym class as well...and then let's start separating swimming pools as well. To think that a gay man would even think about making a wise ass comment in a military shower is literally laughable, but I suppose it could happen. If he does then we will just have to see who is going to be "man" enough to try and wrestle with him naked in the shower aren't we? I mean come on people get over this and move on to something else already.
JB: Yeah it’s probably just as silly and as simple as you say. So can I shower with your wife naked as long as long as I restrain? Heck no should be your reply! BUT why, as long as I am going to control myself? I’ll tell you… because she deserves privacy from anyone that could look at her in ways other than another Airman. If what you are saying is ok then why do we separate men and women?! Please answer that using your same logic. PLUS like DW said it’s also about WAY MORE than the shower. Time will expose the issues, just remember today and be willing to change your stance if the evidence shows that it’s gonna cause more than if they decided to stop carrying Kellogg’s brand cereal in the chow hall.
DS: So in your world my wife should be mad as hell right now because in my 7 deployments in my career at some point it is very likely that I showered or roomed with a gay man...right? Get real...you actually believe that just by allowing gay people to serve without having to hide it that it now will be a free for all in the shower room? And how do you suppose we should separate the shower rooms...those who openly admit they are gay must have their own showers...if that is the case then yes you are actually going to open up more chance of something to occur because you have now removed all doubt of anyone being straight in the room. I say once again, if a gay man actually has the guts to get in a public shower wtih a group of men and think he will get away with sneaking some peaks, then obviously you haven't been in that situation very much. Say DADT was still left in place...what do you think has prevented gay people from doing what you thinnk they will do when it becomes law? It isn't fear of being kicked out I can assure you. They don't act because it would be detrimental to the unit and to their own personal safety. People with sound judgement don't attempt to pursue those that aren't interested. Just keep in mind in the end we all raise our hands to obey the orders of those appointed over us...you don't like it you can always leave.
JB: No the point I am making is that separation is not a plausible idea AT ALL. But it’s the same as men showering with women. It’s a privacy thing. I don’t think (for the third or fouth time) that they will be groping other guys but its going to create problems if a “queen” decides to even come in there with a bunch of other guys. IT’S A DISTRACTION BECAUSE THEY WILL HAVE SEPERATED THEMSELVES. That’s as simple as I can make it. The issue is now they have the right to act and be gay. And depending on how thick they pour it on will also determine the reactions. DADT kept them from throwing it in your face. Now they have a "right" to and when people react (and they will) they will sue for harassment. That’s the only way it’s like minorities and woman. People looking to exploit will do so and they couldn’t before. Sure there are gays in now but they are respectful gays, the kind that don’t bring up being gay just like I don’t bring up my sexual practices. They are either that way or they have been forced to be that way. They just received the full attention of the country and congress that they can be gay and be proud and be in the military. IT’S A DISTRACTION WE DON’T NEED. Your wife should shower with people that are not interested in her and so should you and I. I mean seriously, if your wife was on deployment and they had a unisex shower system that would be ok with her and you? If a guy is respectful I guess I don’t care but we are about to open the door to a different type of gay folks, some that might not use the sound judment you are talking about.
JB: We are just having a debate so your last line was unnecessary and immature. My drill weekends cost me a ton of money. I joined with the SOLE purpose to serve. I own a biz and have three kids and did when I joined. I didn’t join for a check or a school grant; I wouldn’t care if they paid me a dollar! I want to protect what’s left of this country. So spare me the… “then you can get out.” What I can do is have my opinion and you can listen and participate or don’t but I am gonna have it! If you can shower with a gay guy with no issue then you would think you could have a debate without telling me what I can do if I don’t like it. Our country is on a fast track that looks identical to that of Rome! This is just another puzzle piece. Look it up. Those are historical facts! I will leave you with this… Let’s say I am a polygamist, (but I don’t get married I just live like I am married to 3 women) and I want to be open about it, why cant I? and so on and so on…. We are changing our military to fill the needs of people it should be the other way around or very soon it won’t look anything like it does now.
DS: I do respect the opinions of all...even you believe it or not. But the bottom line is the military is changing as it has for centuries and we all have a choice to either fight the change or move on to some other profession. I do respect your choice to serve in the capacity that you are, but I am speaking from 20 years of experience with deployments where I have been around people who were likely gay and because both they and I were professional about it, it never was an issue. Not sure what your background is, but you are making a lot of assumptions where I am basing it all on my career experiences. I would love for you to instead come to this debate with factual life experiences where a gay person disrupted your unit's role in the military and base it on the fact that they did something wrong and not just because they were gay. As for the history of the world, I do believe I have been around enough of the world to be aware that there are larger issues than this one to be concerned about. That is unless you can show me that the real goal of Islamic extremism is to turn the US military into a bunch of homosexuals. Then you and I might acutally agree on something.
LP: Holy novel!!!
CC: ‎@JB - DS said it all, but here's my reply anyways.
#1 - If DADT didn't bar homosexuals from joining the military, then gay men have been in the military both before and since you joined. If you ever bathed in an open bay shower, you have showered with other men. Some of those other men were gay. Therefore, repealing DADT changes nothing... you are still showering with men who are potentially homosexual, so the whole shower situation is a moot point.
#2 - Once again, I did not make a blanket statement. I said "the majority of gay men *I KNOW* _seem_ like they can handle a fight better than most straight guys *I'VE* seen." This is strictly from personal experience, and was used to counter what was, in my opinion, a defense of DADT because it protects sissy gay queens who can't defend themselves from obviously more masculine straight men.
#3 - If someone "throws it in your face," meaning they approach you in an inappropriate way, there are consequences. If it occurs at work, it's sexual harassment. If it occurs after work, it is sexual assault. There are laws in place to protect anyone from being harmed mentally or physically by an overt sexual act.
However, if by "throw it in your face" you mean makes you uncomfortable because they give their same sex partner a polite kiss on the lips before heading off to work, then the only thing hurt is your feelings. In which case, you need to grow up and realize that not everyone conforms to your feelings of what's normal.
#4 - I'm sure us minorities and women out there aren't out to strictly game the system and exploit the military for money. I haven't sued anyone yet, and I'm fairly sure DW hasn't either. Talk about blanket statements...
#5 - Can you hug your wife as she drops you off at work? Kiss her on the lips? Bring her out to the wing picnic? All without fear of being denied the opportunity to serve your country honorably? No? Then you aren't being denied the right to have an open relationship.
When someone says a gay man or a lesbian woman can "serve openly" it doesn't mean they can have an all-same-sex orgy at work. Simply put, it simply means they can do their job in the military while maintaining a homosexual relationship off duty.

Businesses Do Not Create Jobs →
A job is created when demand for goods or services is greater than the existing ability to provide them. When there is a demand, people will see the need and fill it. Either someone will start filling the demand alone, or form a new business to fill it or an existing provider of the good or service will add employees as needed. Squashed: Truth and Patriotism →
Patriotic Conservative has written a paean to patriotism. It made me wonder whether patriotism demanded more than simply unquestioning loyalty. To be great at mathematics, you need to study math.
